Climate Justice

Climate justice addresses the ethical and social dimensions of climate change, focusing on equitable solutions that prioritize the needs and rights of vulnerable communities disproportionately affected by its impacts. It recognizes that while Somalia contributes minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, it faces severe consequences such as droughts, desertification, floods, and rising temperatures. Climate justice aims to ensure that local communities have the resources, knowledge, and agency to adapt to these challenges while holding global actors accountable for mitigation and support. The following are the key areas of priority:

  • Promoting fair access to climate adaptation funding for local communities.
  • Addressing climate-induced displacement and supporting resilience-building for affected populations.
  • Encouraging sustainable practices in agriculture, forestry, and resource management.
  • Amplifying the voices of vulnerable populations in global climate negotiations and policies.
  • Advancing climate-smart development strategies that align with local needs and capacities.
  • Strengthening community-led efforts to restore degraded land and protect biodiversity.
Approaches
  • Grassroots advocacy for equitable policies and funding mechanisms.
  • Capacity-building for communities to engage in climate-resilient livelihoods.
  • Partnerships with international bodies to integrate local needs into climate finance and action plans.
